John Robert “Bob” Davis (1925 – 2002)
Bob Davis was a great role model as a father and as a husband. He was born in Vanceburg, KY in 1925 and he grew up to be 6′ 8″ tall. He was a gentle giant and had a heart of compassion for the poor and disadvantaged. He loved baseball and went on to pitch in the minor leagues for the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Athletics. He loved sports and spent many hours working with young people volunteering as a coach and instructor.
Bob was a World War II Army veteran and military rites were performed by the Martinsville/Henry County Honor Guard at his burial. He went on to retire from DuPont in Martinsville, VA after 33 years of service and was a faithful member of Druid Hills Baptist Church for over 20 years.
Bob was also an adoptive father and he had a tender heart for children. His wife Delois recalls him saying that for Christmas the best gift of all would be to “have the family together for a meal and then to do something for a needy family”. He was always giving and doing for others.
Bob Davis had a humble spirit and a heart of gold.
